Book Review – Half Girlfriend – Nehali Lalwani

About the Author

Chetan Bhagat is a popular youth icon of India and popular writer also. He is the author of bestsellers like One Night @ the Call Center, Five Point Someone, 3 mistakes of My life and 2 States: The Story of My Marriage.

Chetan Bhagat’s past books had inspired many directors of Bollywood to make movies in his book and movies like 3 idiots, 2 states, Kai PO Che is inspired from Chetan Bhagat’s books.

Book Cover: The cover was simple but attractive.

I Liked:  A new point of view about non native speakers of English and rural people of India is being wonderfully inscribed by the author. I used to judge a lot of people based on how they talk in English  (even though my English is not that great) It gave me a new idea that there is no relationship between how good a guy is and how well he talk in English.

Yes, Half Girlfriend gives you a new definition about true love.  It also talks about a typical friend zone’d guy in India, I  liked that  part.

Don’t Quit. At the end you are going to get it is the mantra that Author tried to depict in his story line.

I disliked:  The repeated references to Madhav’s poor English is annoying at times.

Conclusion:

Chetan Bhagat always takes up issues which echoes the issues of the masses. Chetan Bhagat has definitely raised a convincing issue and he deserves great compliments for that and that can be his reason to keep it simple in terms of narration, language, sentence construction and other intricacies of storytelling. However, the story sticks to its central idea throughout. Its a charming love story and  you will end up embedded for Madhav.

The last part of the story was the best. Honestly, that’s like a second-life in this novel. While the story was to be built around almost ten years, there were certain abrupt skips the author had to take. To the point they were sensibly selected. The Bill Gates episode was too much to the plot.

No matter what, it was a good read. An interesting one to be specific. Although not the entire story, but some twists of the story made me unable to keep the book aside! For me, ‘Revolution 2020’ and ‘2 states’ still remain the best of Chetan Bhagat’s novels so far. Awaiting another book from him!
